I posted several months ago about purchasing a tripod for my macro and bird photography. I was able to find a used Jobu Algonquin tripod and here's my review.
This is a 3 section carbon fiber tripod that weighs in at slightly over 4 lbs. There is no center post and when folded up is around 27 inches in length. Build quality is excellent and appears to be well manufactured with no visible defects. Legs extend to provide a maximum height of 62 inches The legs can be extended out so that the camera base is approximately 5 inches from the ground for wildflower photography. The tips of the legs have rubber caps that cover the ice spikes and can be removed when shooting from an icy situation. The tripod comes with a bag, instructions for leg assembly, 3 set screws and Allen wrench for preventing the tripod head from loosening from base.
Overall, the 36 mm carbon fiber legs dampen vibrations significantly while shooting at slow shutter speeds. The black swallowtail cat image was taken at 1/25 sec and shows no vibration artifacts. The tripod is rated to handle 55 lbs of equipment weight. I am 6 foot tall and I was able to adjust the height easily so that I did not have to stoop down to operate the camera.
Overall, the quality is comparable to the RRS series of tripods and one can expect years of use from this tripod. I am quite pleased with this purchase.
Jim, a stunning macro / closeup image posted here. Sounds like the new hardware is well tested and proving to be a real asset with regard to your style of work.
Thank you for taking time to share your test results and observations using your recent tripod purchase. Over the years these type of updates seem to be very rare and are truly missed overall IMO.

Sounds like a good choice, Jim. I've used Jobu gimbal heads since my first one and always been pleased with the build quality. I'm glad to hear their tripods are as good.
Preston, as I only just recently changed my preferences to show "latest comments" instead of "latest post" on the forums this discussion once again became current at the top of the listed posts. In the past the activity levels use to push many items out of view and certain responses were missed, at least by me. So, thanks for the tip on changing that setting.
