Sorry to hear about your trevails yesterday, Rene. I drove through that pea soup fog late last night (yup, 15 mph), expecting to park at the bristlecone forest parking lot, but the fog was so thick I never saw the turnoff! The fog lifted briefly at Summit Lake, so I parked it there to sleep, and watched the clouds drift in and out while the Devin Townsend Band blasted through the car stereo, with lightning somewhere off in the far distance lighting up the starry sky with regularity.
This morning I awoke and thought, "Oh sh*t, no more fog." But it looked like some cloud action might've been taking place on the other side of the mountain, so I headed up. WOW!!! What a morning! I'll post something in ESS later, as well as either a bighorn ram or fox shot from RMNP a few days ago over in the fauna gallery. But I thought I'd share my new "artist's photo" image with y'all first. The effect is called a Brocken Spectre.
When I first looked at this on my crumby work monitor, it honestly looked like the shadow/person was playing air guitar. I'll have to check it out when I get home, or maybe it was some sort of Fruedian thing.
Awesome, Todd. I think I've seen one other photo like this and read that this phenomenon is pretty rare. It's got to be even more rare to have such an incredible scene to go with it.
Best Spectre of the Brocken I've ever seen - including Galen Rowell. This shot will make me go out the next time I think there's no chance of making a decent image - well done!
