Best I could do

Not sure what type of bird this is and it's not a very good shot but the best I could do. No matter how or where I positioned myself, there was all kinds of foliage obstucting the view.

This is heavily cropped and has been sharpened. Would appreciate comments.

Thanks

Pity about the OOF grass, but it`s a nice shot of a Moorhen captured in a very interesting pose.

Ah, I did wonder if it was a Moorhen but wasn't sure, thanks for confirming that for me.

I agree about the OOF grass, I just couldn't get around it, I am disabled and would have had to go down the bank slightly and it's a bit soft underfoot there, would probably have ended up in the pond with the Moorhen! lol!

`T`is a bugger when they won`t pose exactly where you want, when you have that award-winning shot in your mind`s eye!
Good luck in your future photographic endeavours, and hope you nail that perfect shot!

You have done very well here... it is a nice behavioural shot of this moorhen with a really good pose, you are aware of the OOF grass, the blown flower heads though are a bit of a distraction that could be toned down a bit in PS.

look forward to seeing more...

Hi Alison

Good pose by the Moorhen, good exposure of the bird and it is nice and sharp as well. The foreground grass is a distraction, and I also find the other foreground flowers intrusive, otherwise not a bad effort.

I think everyone on this forum can sympathise with your frustration of waiting for the subject to move into the right place at the right time, but that is often the way it is with nature photography 99 duds for every 1 winner.

My only tip for this type of shot is to firstly find a position and angle which gives a good clean shot, and try to get as low as you can. Most wildlife shots work best if taken from as near to eye level of the subject as possible. With nature photography it is often best to find your location first and then wait for the subject to wander into it, rather than chasing the subject.

cheers
