GCG # 4
20D, 400/2.8 + 2x, ISO200, 1/500 @ f10, Gitzo 500 + 393, C1pro + CS2.

Hi,

The eggs have still to hatch but spent a very enjoyable couple of mornings with the Great Crested Grebes, got a few shots on Saturday but the contrast from the light was huge, with a small amount of cloud cover on Sunday morning things were more promising.

Was very nearly overgunned for this shot, camera was set to vertical orientation with the 2x on the lens expecting something else to happen.....

Not over pleased with the dark bg or the fallen blossom on the water but I tend not to do too much retouching...

All the best

This is stunning Phil. I don't think that the dark bg is a problem, in fact it really highlights the head beautifully. Not sure if you have any room left on the rhs for a different crop - I suspect not! :toast:

Hi Clive,

No afraid no room at all for a different crop, the air was very nearly blue but then I remembered that Kev (Kebul) and his good lady were just around the corner

All the best

Wow, great photo Phil.

I agree with the guys above, the background or the blossom are not a problem for me!

A very different Grebe shot so thats a bonus and the reflection tops it off a treat :toast:

Stunning shot Phil. Love everything about it. I'd get over the blossoms.... they're really not a problem here

Hi Phil

Cracking shot, well caught and good reactions. Whilst the reflection works well I actually prefer this image if I crop out most of the reflection and make the shot into a letterbox shape. For me this then makes the Grebe stronger in the frame, but that is my preference, the square crop as presented here works well too.

The dark background is maybe not ideal but you have controlled the exposure well and the end result is fine.

cheers

Enjoying your series of GCG shots this is another fine one. The apple blossom in the water doesn't bother me at all. Interesting combination of wing movement and the stillness of the reflection.
