I'd love to believe the sighting really was a pair of gray wolves. But I'm a skeptic...
Too bad the animals didn't show themselves to some of the RMNPers who were in the area last weekend. There would have been photos to accompany the sighting!
No wolves spotted by us last weekend up there, but we did see a number of bear tracks in the snow on Saturday. Darren, Rene and I did a hike from the end of the Capitol Creek Road up the Hell Roaring trail, and saw at least 10-15 good sized tracks in the snow and mud. First time I've actually seen bear tracks in Colorado. I'll try to post a shot tonight!!
Darren, I think that was on the paved part of Capitol Creek Road, Saturday AM. Since I was the last of the three cars, I only saw a flash of the thing, and actually thought it was a deer! No help there, huh?
It may well be the case that wolves are finding their way into Colorado. About 2 years ago a female wolf was hit and killed on I-70 near Idaho Springs with a tag that marked her as part of a Yellowstone pack (mentioned in the article linked above). At the time it was thought that she wasn't alone. Who knows?
Darren - I got a good but brief glimpse of the animal that crossed your path last weekend. It was definitly much larger than a fox ... more like a coyote or large dog.
Oddly enough, I told my sister this story and she saw the "biggest" coyote of her life up Hunter Creek the other day. Now she is wondering if it was a wolf. Maybe the wolf pack that was south of Pinedale came down this way. Plenty of Elk in the "Elk Mountains" to prey upon. Robbie George
