Had a couple of hours between jobs and found this liitle one collecting small insects from the nettles near the beach at Hayle, Cornwall. Just can not work out what it is, so if you can identify it can you let me know what are the giveaway points to help ID this and other like species.

Definantly a member of the warbler family,I reckon its a whitethroat as it has a pale greyish head,a white ring around the eye, pale orange/brown legs and bright chestnut panels on the wings-nice clear image showing habitat

Dave

Many thanks for the ID and description. I did look at female Whitethroat but the breast seemed far darker ( a definate buff colour) in the Collins book so that is what put me off that ID. I presume then that there can be quite a variation in the colour structure of individual birds and that it is a combination of features as you pointed out, that gives the ID,

Many thanks

Nice image John. My first thoughts are that it's a female Whitethroat as well. :toast:

Whitethroat John - the old english name was 'nettlecreeper' so you shot is very apt.

Definitely a Whitethroat, John. The giveaway, curiously enough, is the white throat!
