I was just sitting having a snack when this graceful bird drifted over. My favourite shot of the day.
Techs
1d2n 400mm F5.6L,handheld, 2000th f7.1 iso400, bit of haze over sun.
Full frame, but I clipped the left edge of the wing so extended the canvas a bit and cut a bit off the right hand side to balance. Sharpened etc in PS.
Sean - when there is a nice breeze up the cliff this is typical sight as they lounge around - just find a suitable spot to sit and wait a bit. This was taken at 1pm my favourite time is late afternoon early evening. Often can get them near eyelevel as they pop above the cliff
top. Sometimes I use a 70-200 with a x1.4.
Super image, well caught flight shot with great colours and a perfect background for this bird. Gannets have such great colour and you have captured that well here. Good detail under the wing as well which can be tricky on bright summer days with the sun high overhead.
Glad to hear that this type of shot is feasible with modest telephoto lenses, my 20D+300+1.4xTC should be adequate for the job.
