I live in southern NH and have never been an "outdoors" person. I have liived in Nashua for 34 years without venturing north of Concord for more than a dozen times so I do not know "north country." I like to shoot birds and go to spots in southern NH and PI.

I am a school teacher and work till 6/21 - after that I am "free" for about 10 weeks.

I am really interested in shooting loons this summer on lakes. I would appreciate tagging along with anyone, taking a waorkshop (a la Grath type), or gettng any information. I know going out onto the lakes helps, but I own no boats.

Allan,

I had fairly good luck photographing loons at Pondicherry from the shore. Umbagog lake and the Pontook Reservoir on Androscoggin river is great places as well, but you need a Kayak or a canoe for that.

Hi Allan! If you do make it up here to the north country, Lake Umbagog and Pontook are good places to go. The loons are fairly used to people as long as you don't get too close. Sometimes they'll swim close to you. I'm just praying that the high waters we are experiencing now due to the rains haven't decimated the new eggs in nests. Seem to happen every other year or so. If you see a loon on a nest and it puts it's head low, you are far too close! They may leave the nest and possibly abandon it. Careful there! But have fun and good luck!

Thanks for the information Dirk and Chris.

Dirk, were the loon shots on your web page from a kayak?

Allan,

Most, but not all were taken from a kayak. Using a kayak/canoe is just about the only way to get close ups. I have frequently been approached a by loon's while just sitting quietly in my kayak.

I was set to buy a Current Designs Kestrl after attending a Kakak demo the Nashua store holds on Tuesday evenings. As luck has it they are out of stock and cannot tell me when they will get more. I will have to start exploring other models. I know I do not want a Pungo design as I felt that did not track well, but something perhaps a step up - I want to keep stability while I try to photograph.
Were your loons taken on Massabesic?
