I have a Sony 19" Trinitron. I'm getting ready to scan and load my trannies to my site. Is their such a thing as a "standard" brightness/contrast that works for most web users? Do I have to calibrate for the web?
Thanks.

Calibrate your monitor and apply SRGB to your images.

What?! Dave Travis has a website! Ahhhh! Is the sky falling???

Like RichieV said, the best you can do is properly calibrate your own monitor, so you know your pics will look right to others who have monitors that are calibrated, or at least close.

Scott, what the heck am I thinking???
Should I try and use the .PNG instead of the .JPG?
Something about gamma, what the heck is gamma???

Dave, .PNG hasn't really caught on much for photo use. I'd stick with .JPG. This page explains gamma pretty well. I use a gamma of 1.8.
HTH

OK, here's what I did.
I've got the monitor set at 1024x768 32bpp.
I used Viewsonic's Colorific calibration tool, and have the gamma set between 1.8 and 2.0, about 1.9, this roughly matches the brightness of my prints. I'm using the sRGB "profile" within Colorific for the monitor. The color, brightness, and contrast matches my prints pretty close, but not the original slides, but I'm not selling them anyway.
Thanks for the advice, and for a good laugh go to: www.davetravisphoto.com.

Dave - Your site isn't working at all for me on Firefox. Works in IE, though.
