Brent D. and I are planning on heading up to Mt. Evans after work for sunset next Wednesday (June 14th). We will be in a Blue Nissan Xterra. Head on up if you are interested. Good excuse to get out and get a shot for that Nature Photography Day contest Rick was telling us about!

Chris,

I may join you up there, along with the wife & kids

How does the light hit Mt. Evans at sunset? Can you point me to an example image?

Tony, I can only show you a few shots from the summit at sunset, which is where I'm guessing Chris and I will head. These are from a few years ago in late June: Mt. Evans Sunset

I'm also gonna try and head up there Wednesday. Assuming work or some other matter doesn't change things.

We will look for you guys up there.
thanks Brent for the pics, i don't have anything from the summit. Here is one at summit lake, which justs gets a hint of sun on the peak at sunset.

Chris/Brent - what time are you guys planning on heading up there? Any idea of where you will shoot the sunset?

Depending on my schedule, I may try to meet you guys.

Hope to see a few of you up there!

Rene, our plan is to meet near Red Rocks & I-70 at a little before 6, and head straight up. We'll kinda see what's interesting on the way up the road, but the plan is to try to shoot sunset from the summit. Of course that depends on the weather, but the forecast as of now is hot and dry. Hope to see you up there!

I was just thinking about heading up to Mt. Evans for a sunset shoot this weekend. I have never been and I am not sure where to go so this would be a great chance for me to see Mt. Evans. I am still learning where everything is, where exactly is Red Rocks and I-70?

Thanks.

Brad - the meeting place Brent is talking about is at the Morrison exit off of Westbound I-70 right before you head into the mountains. there is a parking lot immediatly to the right (north) as you come off the exit, this is where we will meet as long as there is room to park. We will immediately be heading up the mountain, so if you miss us, here is directions how to get up there: From Denver, take I-70 west, and take Exit 240 (second Idaho Springs exit). Go left (south) after you exit and head south on SR-103. this will take you to Echo Lake. Right past Echo Lake is the turn off (right) to the Mt. Evans road and the ranger station (i think $7-$10 fee). then just head up the road and stop off where you please, but as Brent said we will be working our way to the summit for sunset.

I plan to be near or just above Summit Lake around 6:00PM – will be in a tan Jeep Grand Cherokee w/Rocketbox on top.

BTW – cost is $10/car. If you have a National Parks Pass, and plan to visit again, ask for the Hologram Upgrade for $15, and you will be able to get in free for the rest of the year.

Also, for a slightly more scenic route – take I-70 West to Exit 252 Evergreen Parkway (C74), go south about 2 miles, and take a right on Squaw Pass Road (CO 103). Follow the road for about 18 miles to the entrance.

Looks like I'll be able to head up there as well. Will meet you guys at the summit. I'll be in a maroon Chevy Malibu.

Cool, looks like we'll have a good turnout!

Brad, Chris and I will meet in the T-Rex lot, which is the northeast one. Here is a map: Hogback parking map
Look for Chris' blue Xterra and my blue 4Runner with the CNP sticker.

Oh yeah, looks like we could have some wind! DOH! Weather Underground That would be because I'm there!!

Any ideas on what the temperature is going to be at the summit around sunset? I guessing it is going to be rather cold, like 10's - 20's? Just don't want to go under or over dressed.

Brad - mid to low 40s - and Windy! Bring something warm!

Well when I want to head out to take some pictures the servers at work just don't want me to leave. I did not get out of work till 7pm. Hope everyone that made it got some great pictures. Looking forward to seeing what you got.

Brad, sorry you couldn't make it, but hate to admit, you didn't miss much of a sunset! We all had a good time, but never got any great color or even direct light on the peak. Oh, and did I mention the 20-30 mph winds?

We had a good turn out, myself, Chris Ebright, Rene, Joe Finn, and Doug Andrews. I'm not sure where Rene ended up shooting "sunset" but the rest of us did the short hike to the north side of Summit Lake, which was mostly protected from the fun winds. All the ice was breaking up on the lake, and made for some cool shapes and patterns, and I think that's what most of us shot.

Good to see everyone, and of course, just good to get out and shoot no matter what!!!
