EOS 5D fault?

Hi Guys,

I have recently purchased a 5D and I have noticed a little niggle and wondered if any of you knew anything about this.

There appears to be a very faint line running vertically across the viewfinder (landscape) which also appears when the camera is held portrait (horizontal line). It appears like a slight mirage through the viewfinder. It does not appear to be on the final images and it appears with a variety of lenses. Is this a fault with the viewfinder or is it common to all 5D's???

I have checked my lenses and there appears to be no fault there. This camera has been out of the box for about 2 days and I would love to know if anyone has experienced anything like this or whether I have to go through the hassle of sending it back!

Many thanks for any help,

Niall

Hi Niall,

While I don't use a 5D, I've certainly never seen anything similar on any of the other Canon bodies I've owned (I'm on my 9th).

It sounds like the lines required for the LCD overlay of the focus point indicators. Does the line meet with the focus brackets?

When the camera is held in portrait format with the shutter button uppermost the line appears to run just under the three central focusing points so you could be quite right Ben. It also appears most visible with a 50mm f/1.8 lens and is more difficult to detect on wider angled lenses or with telephoto lenses.

It doesnt sound like a normal fault so I will contact the Canon help desk and see what they have to say.

Thanks for the help,
Niall

Hi Niall,

FWIW, The line will be more visible with the f/1.8 lens because it will let more light in (your viewfinder should look brighter) than any of your other lenses, most of which will be either f/2.8, f/4 or f/5.6.

Hi Niall,

I have a 5d and don't have any such line in the viewfinder, just a bagfull of dust!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your help. I have contacted Canon with the fault description and the advice you guys gave. They agreee and suggested there may be a fault with the mirror so I ahve returned the camera to Warehouse Express who are sending out a new one tommorow - now I get the excitement of tearing opening the packaging of a new camera all over again!

Thanks for your help

Niall
