Formby is more than just red squirrels it is also a large coastal site in which to practice your landscape photography and sand avoidance techniques.
FYI Sunrise is at (approx) 4.30 and sets at approx 21.30
I would suggest a earlish start for anybody who wants to feed the squirrels as they will be stuffed by 12 noon with visitors peanuts. Additionally @ around midday you will have an enquiring audience when you start shooting.
Would suggest we try and park near the Squirrel Woodland entrance at the top of the hill - the toilets are close and we can look out for one anothers cars on what is a very visited site. There are little in the way of refreshments on site so bring some munchies and I would also bring munchies for the squirrels as the stuff they sell on site isn't of the highest calibre. Hazelnuts are much prefered.
Finally, rendezvous times will be sorted out later closer to the day...
A tip for preventing sand getting in your tripod locks especially gitzo users when you are flat to the ground crawling about...... make some tripod leg socks....
I used some spare green hide canvas making simple closed tubes the length of longest leg section ( I only use my tripod "closed" at this height on the beach). At the open top end I fashioned a closing method from rucksack elastic (the sort that criss crosses on back of rucksacks) and ball toggles held in place by a simple single foldback and stitch - the elastic and ball toggle closes the sock tube just below the leg angle set on my gitzo to make the set up even more sand tight.
Simple but effective
I will be on my summer hols in Slovenia that weekend and hopefully will catch up with some of the continental black cousins.....
