I just thought I'd pass on some information. I came back after a shoot today and went to download my pics, on switching on my camera and subsequent card readers I got the message "the card needs to be formatted". Great, I thought, there goes this weekends pics. Anyway, I've heard of photorescue and thought I'd give that a go, and did so, but it's a very hasty package and left me with no confidence that it had done it OK, so I did a further search and came across Digital Picture Recovery which refers to this exact fault and hey presto after two hours it kicked out 95% of the images, so fairly happy although a few quid short and a few hours lost.
Thing is don't panic there's the safety internet to land in.
