Young Kestrel, Bradup West Yorkshire. 10th June 2006

Spent an enjoyable few hours late morning with some confiding young Kestrels as they practiced hunting. It was very bright and sunny and difficult to get the birds into good light. I think this is the best shot of the session. This one came over to give me the once over - hovered over my head for a few frames.

It was great fun watching them trying to hunt - they have the hovering bit pretty well sussed but not the catching part

Techs
1d2 400mm 5.6L x1.4, 1/1600th f8 iso 400. 50% of frame, sharpened (bit of barbed wire just above wall cloned out) etc in PS.

By for now
John

Hi John,

I think this absolutely superb and totally diferent to the more usual hovering behaviour often recorded.
An amazingly dynamic pose and spot on focus.
Without the wall and folliage this would be excellent but with it included it puts this right up a level,IMHO,not only for the sense of perspective and as an 'anchor' but because it portrays just how low this swooping bird is flying.
You must be thrilled with this one.

Wow! Amazing capture. Feels like the view-point of the prey. Can't fault anything about it.

Nice one John, looking forward to seeing your other captures, knowing your strict rules they'll be ace as well.

One of the best images of a Kestrel I have ever seen - brilliant!

Love it-The wall really adds and you get the feeling of the bird gliding and swooping low over the ground :toast:

Excellent, really like the point of view, but I'm afraid I do have a nit :frown:

It looks like you have cloned out some errant grass etc. in particular around the tip of the lower wing, there are some obvious artifacts and some of the grass looks a strangley cut off, I think a touch more work and this image would be simply stunning....

Hi John

It is not very often I open up a posting on UKNP and just go WOW, but I did with this one. A very impressive flight shot of this bird which we don't normally see in this way, superb capture.

:toast:

cheers

Very different from the usual Kestrel photo’s, one of the best I’ve seen.

Excellent flight shot, very impressive timing :toast:
