Snow on Waterville Plateau
I finally am processing some pictures from February and would really like to hear what you think of this one. I had been driving around in fog so thick you couldn't see the sides of the road when it suddenly cleared. Makes me wonder what all I missed that day.

Slight crop from a Velvia 100 slide.

Interesting snow landscape. I like the shape of the wintry tree against the sky. I might have used the 81a warming filter with the velvia film to render the snow whiter. Velvia has a tendency to make snow look somewhat blue, especially with a polarizer. Another way to counter the blue tint is 1/2 to 1 stop plus exposure compensation. Probably can also be done in ps, but I usually compensate in the field. Then again some prefer the blue tint.

Harald,

Thanks for the constructive comments. I think you have identified what has been bothering me about this one - just too blue. I agree that getting it right in the field is the way to go but for now, I'll have to try to tone it down a bit in Photoshop.

Thanks!

I dont know, I kinda like how blue this is. This comp almost works better without the small shack...but I think its really cool (no pun intended)

Phil,
You might be interested in John Shaw's Nature Photography Field Guide. He describes in detail how to make whites look white with film.

Philip,
I kind of feel that the tree really dominates the comp. Maybe moving back a little and to the left when you shot this so the tree would be more to the right, a little smallerand a little more off center. The blue doesn't bother me that much. All IMHO of course.

I love it as is! I love the blue tone it has, I like the crisp winter feel this has. Erik's idea is also a good one as an alternative comp.

Phil, welcome to NPN. I really like this one. I am always on the lookout for lone tree compositions. There is a nice tension between the tree and the old barn. My eye goes from one to the other. Works well.
