A Petit Jean Sunrise
After seeing Wayne's really nice sunrise photos I'm a little reluctant to post mine, but since its my first post here in the forum...maybe you guys will give me some slack. This was taken at Petit Jean Mountain, AR a few weeks back. I have a small portfolio here under Richard Lee if anyone is interested. Thanks for your comments and pointers.

Welcome to CSNP! It is absolutely fantastic to see all the new members posting! Thanks for the compliment on my recent posts Dick.

I have never been to Petit Jean but the images I see from there are always wonderful and yours is no different. I get a real sense from the ocean of clouds that they are almost inviting you to drift off into a dream world. You've captured some nice tonality in the foreground too!

My only suggestion would have been to move the sun away from the edge of the frame. I'm really glad you have joined us. Looking forward to seeing more and don't forget to critique our images as well. Thanks for posting! :wavey:

Nice to have you guys from Texas posting your work! And, you have some impressive work on your website as well, Dick.

I think Wayne has a good point about the placement of the sun here - a little too close to the corner for my tastes too. Also, I think this image could be strengthened considerable by finding a spot with a few wildflowers or something to give some depth and interest to the FG area. To make it look right, you might consider taking several shots at various exposures, and making a composite. Though I've not tried this, it seems pretty simple, and I want to learn more during the next workshop I take. I'm still a little wet behind the ears when it comes to digital...

Thanks for posting!

I can only reiterate what Wayne and Bill have suggested. I do blended exposures to increase apparent dynamic range all the time - it's a great technique (with either digital or film) to overcome the limitations of our hardware.

Dick,

Welcome to the forum. It's always good to see new people's work. We often share a common opinion about things on this forum. After all, we are a small crowd that all learn a lot from each other. I do share the opinions above. I'd look for some more foreground interest first, then start considering the blended exposure stuff. Sometimes it's not there, and in this case, I think you've done a great job of capturing an nice image. The sun does need to move over a little. Can't wait see more.
