This is one of the many many photos I have from my Spring with the Grebes at Stover. This is the pair re-establishing their bond after one has returned from fishing.
The good news is that they managed to fledge 1 chick just before (must have been literally hours or a day) the water levels rose and flooded the nest - talk about skin of the teeth!
They've already started nest building again in the middle of the lake and the chick is now a precocious teenager sulkily following his parents around.
Cheers

ps This doesn't convert down well for the web - whites blow out etc, but the original file is fine - am more interested in composition critique...
Having been shooting something similar I apprecaite how difficult a shot like this can be, I like the interactive behaviour and the sense of the environment where these grebes build their nests, only wish is for a slight head turn from the bird on the nest, not always possible I know.
Good posting. I too have similar shots that I don't know how to compose, so very interested in replies here. As Phil said, a slight head turn would be perfect, but not always possible. As it is it's a nice behavioural shot that is typical of these.
I don't know if a square crop is any good? Cropping across both of their bodies? At the end of the day it's a habitat shot that you've captured and composed very nicely
An excellent behavioural shot, composition works fine for me,would be a bonus if you've got any frames with a fraction more room behind each bird, but certainly not critical, and the composition as shown looks fine,IMO.
I like the lighting on this one,it has a most attractive light and airy feel to it.
Very nice.
