Experimenting with new gear, tracking a Barn Owl (c)
After the loss of virtually all my gear I have taken the plunge and gone 'Nikon' (Sorry John Mac!). I love the camera and lenses but it takes some getting used to after the 20D. There are so many knobs and buttons and options to master.
Went to newly set-up local falconry place to practise tracking on the birds and this is one of the results.

Nikon D2x, 200-400 VR, Manual metering, tripod

Hi Paula,

Good to see you posting again and pleased to hear you've replaced your gear.

Well if these are the results your getting,I'm switching too

Cracking shot and nothing wrong with the tracking here or more importantly your technique.

Welcome back to the dark site. I have used the D2X and 200-400 for just under a year and its superb and the best allround nature photographers kit around at the moment. It sure has many many option, especially in AF. If you want i can send you details on the best settings for AF. Do you use the 1.4 and 1.7 converter as well?

Thank you so much, feel quite overwhelmed by this welcome.
Rene, I do have the 1.4 but not the 1.7 as I thought the AF would not work..is that correct. I do not trust my eyes for manual focus! Info on AF...always very welcome! Thanks a lot.

Paula, AF works pretty well with the 1.7, will drop you an email with some settings after i retrun from Holland
