Just wanted to thank everybody who provided me help on selecting a lens. I feel so much better prepared to select the correct ones.

One other question I have are the prime lenses. I see they are identified as a certain mm, such as 200, 300, 400, etc., while zoom and macros are identified in a range (100-300, 200-400, etc.). Are prime lenses just fixed to the mm or are they zoomable. This may sound elementary, but would appreciate any assistance on this issue!

Primes are fixed focal length lenses. The one length that you see (in mm's) is the one that you get.

Good luck!

Zooms are called zooms because they zoom in and out. I really never liked the term "prime" lens--does that mean it's tender and good to eat? I just say "fixed length." The posts on the other thread kind of had me summarizing what your choices likely are, depending on what you want to spend. In rough price order:

1. Sigma 500mm f5.6, fixed length. (taking 77mm filter.) $300-$500 on eBay

2. Sigma 50-500mm zoom, takes 86mm filters. $~700 on eBay.

3. Canon 100-400mm IS or Nikon 80-400mm VR zoom lens
