So, I'll take back what I said previously about good service at Canon Inc. But at least they were nice enough to refund me the initial $900 they charged for repair when they finally determined the camera was NOT repairable!

But still, it took them three weeks to determine this during which time I could have already purchased another camera - double ACK! - and been off shooting. Now it's time to go find the best deal on a new 5D......grumble...

Condolances on the final departure of your loved one :frown:

Did your lens pull through?

Oh man, this is bad news. Well you have until July 15th for the 300.00 rebate on the camera...... good luck on finding someone with the best price, service and fast delivery !!

OUCH,
Maybe you should consider a pro body since you put your gear through ringer. I know the 1DSMKII is expensive but I bet you could pay for it easily with selling your images OR, there's always the D2... eh, never mind.

Erik, if I go with a 1-series it's not going to be the 1DsMK2, it will be whatever Canon comes up with next. I can't justify four thousand bucks for just a few MP's and waterproofing, especially with the increased blukiness of the body. I've also taken out an insurance policy that protects business assets should this happen again. And yes, the lens did pull through.

Marc your sky is really lighting up out there right this second....I am looking out my office window and the clouds are great......fine some wildflowers or trees and go shooting.....do you have a backup body?

Marc,
Sorry for the bad news,

The 1DS2 also has a much better autofocus system (not that matters to landscape, but to wildlife) and many refinements to to personal setups. Being I have both I would still get the 1DS2 over a 5D. However, you drop either in a river they both are probably toast! The water proofing isn't that good, mainly for rain or sea spray.

If I was in the market again, I would wait until November to see what happens, but since you are a pro that is a life time away... Bet up get another 5D

B&H has it for ~$2900, but there are several places in the mid $2700's which Iwould think twice about dealling with.

Marc,

Canoga Camera in CA is a well known photography supplier on the west coast like B&H is on the east coast. They have the 5D for about $2500 plus shipping. I was really close to getting one for a while.

Are there going to be services for the deceased? All joking aside, I'm very sorry to hear about the whole situation. That's a lot of Benjamins and lost time during some really good shooting weather no matter how you look at it. Did you sell off your film body / bodies when you went to digital?

Mmmm. Rough luck, but it can happen any moment to any of us. Insurance is certainly the big solution, but that doesn't solve the wait for repair/replacement.

I'm not sure moving to a beefier camera would contribute as much as investing in an emergency backup. We have backups simply because we can't afford to turn away clients while awaiting repairs. A digital Rebel certainly wouldn't be your first choice, but it would save the day if it shared space in your kit with the replacement 5D.

Today I purchased a new 5D from B&H (hopefully the last one I buy this year). It will be here Tuesday, just in time for the small workshop I'm teaching in the gorge on Wednesday.

I still have the EOS-3 body but prefer digital, sold my scanner and my favorite lens went down with the camera and only recently came back fixed.
