I was out early today trying for some grebes with chicks as i had seen some in a marina on Lake Geneva yesterday,The breeding area though was noisey but no chicks as they are still in the middle of the reeds,The lake has risen a few feet in the last couple of weeks and with the strong winds a couple of weeks ago and tonnes of driftwood i think a lot of nests have been distroyed,I found a new grebes nest with eggs on it in a small stream so stayed for a hour to get some grebe on nest shots,I was in chest waders at the edge as the grass is very long and in the way,I had set up with a 1d2 and 500 however the battery died so put the 20d on,Its amazing the difference between the 1.3x of the 1d and the 1.6x crop of the 20d and it made me abit close and was more than lucky when they mated that they fitted in the frame although very tight,I cocked up as it caught me unawears and the composition was to the left so this is full frame with abit cut off the right to even it up,I will spend some time with these birds over the next couple of weeks and try to get it right next time

Dave, great action shot. You are already said it yourself; just a tad too big in the frame. The whites seem a tiny bit blown out on my LCd monitor but i really like this image!

Hello Dave
No matter how much equipment you take its always at the worst possible moment that something lets you down. This is a great image but would certainly have been better with the smaller crop, in fact you have done well to just fit them in!
The whites look OK on my screen too, but I agree with Paul that it appears a little soft.
Best wishes
Phil

Does appear to be a tad soft...
lovely to see despite the tightness in the frame
