Pochard
Pochard (Aythya ferina) – Essex, UK.

Canon EOS 1D MkIIN, 600/f4 IS + EF2xII, wimberley head on ground plate, hide from Wildlife Watching Supplies.
Manual exposure mode f11, 1/800, iso 400, AWB (converted to daylight in processing).
RAW image processed in Capture One; sharpened in Photoshop CS2 (amount = 100 percent; radius = 0.2; threshold = 0 applied five times); full frame.

I see lots of posts on various forums saying that you should avoid the Canon 2x converter and that you can’t make sharp images with it. This is patently nonsense; and particularly with camera bodies using APS-size sensors. I use the 2x frequently and provided that you stop down to f11 or thereabouts, the resulting images do not show any degradation that I can see. Of course you need a stable platform and good technique, but that applies across the board.

I still have a few places left on my weekend wildlife photography workshops. This is the type of image that you would expect to bring home together with an understanding of how to use flash to good effect and how to process your images to obtain the highest quality results.

Totally agree Phil
Now that I only have the 300mm f2.8 most of my images are made using the 2x II extender at f5.6 or f8. With the aperture set at f8 smoetimes the images are so sharp that I'd daredn't apply any USM to them at all for fear of them looking over sharpened.

Love the composition above

Hi Phil

Beautiful - love the light and low angle. I agree with your comments re the x2 I never shy away from using it if needs be and if the light is good I am rarely disappointed!

Well, I couldn't get this sharpness with the Nikkor 500mm and a 2x. The Canon IS counts for a great deal I think. Good composition and excellent shooting angle.

Hello Phil
Delightful image beautifully presented. It certainly emphasises your point about the converter.
Best wishes

Very nice.... concur wholeheartedly with your observations on the 2x, often use mine...

Question if that is OK... Do you do any additional preparation to the area you are shooting from to lower the viewpoint? Appreciate that the 2x will reduce the angle significantly, just wondered as, at least here in Kent, we seem to be plagued with high steep banks

A pleasure to view
