Unknown falls
Before you judge this image, I just want you to know that I am posting it to show you a waterfall I came across last weekend. by the time we got there the lighting was harsh, the wind was blowing and there is NO TRAIL to the falls....I have looked in my waterfall book and on maps and have not been able to find it....maybe I am over looking it but I about lost my leg trying to get to it....

It is on the Siouxon trail in the Gifford Pinchot Forest
we had to go down the face of a hill to get to it....there is a big log that goes up the hill we took back up, but most of the logs that are laying down are all rotted and when you step in a place you think is gonna be firm, its not.....very dangerous even for experienced hikers climbers....

I wish more people could get here as I would love to see this falls at differet times of the year...

I am not really looking for comments and critiqes on this one...I know it sucks!!! but maybe you have been here before or may know the exact name of the falls....

thanks in advance

Cheers
D

Can't help you with the name of the falls but I can enter a strong dissent to the "sucks" comment---good dof, sharpness, clarity, oh yeah, composition too. IMHO of course.

It isn't a grade "A" image, but I agree with Eric. This in no way sucks! It is really cool that you found this. It would be pretty fun to get Mr Falls Fenimore in there to really work this baby. Oh yeah, I'd like to have a whack at it myself. Do I hear ROAD TRIP!?!

How many miles in on the trail were you? What was the last trail intersection? How did you even know the falls were there? By the sound?

we just kept hiking.....and took the upper trail that leads to the ridge....my friend knows more about the area then I do...he works forest fires and has been in these areas his whole life...I will have to get some more info about it from him...the one really bad thing about the falls is that the left side is soooooo dominant over the right side...as you can see from the picture....its hard to get a correct metering on the image....

if anyone is up for it, lets plan a road trip/hike up there....I can show you multiple falls with very very easy access to shoot.....

we were 4.7 miles up the trail....

Hah! I found it! It's the Middle Siouxon Falls!
Go to http://www.oregonkayaking.net/creeks/upper_siouxon/upper_siouxon.html and scroll down.
Use a kayak next time. :-)

well one of 2 things......either the web page is describing the falls wrong or my waterfall book is wrong.....because the falls we were at were way up...nowhere near the middle like the book shows.........so now I am really curious......~~~~ insert me scratching head and drinking beer here~!~~~~~~~~

Well, this is nowhere near the terrible photograph you describe it as, Darren! Actually, pretty good. Of course, you'll have to visit it again so that you can come away with an even better shot...

It should be noted that there actually is no official name for this waterfall. They kayakers dubbed it the middle falls because it's the middle of the 4 major waterfalls of the creek. According to the most recent edition of "Waterfall Lovers Guide to the Pacific Northwest" by Greg Plumb, the "middle falls" is a small 10 footer about 1/2 mile upstream from Siouxon Falls itself (in my professional opinion, Plumb is wrong). Nice to know it is accessible from land though. I've been wanting to get back down to that area for a looooong time.

no suckage here... in fact my only nit is that too much of the water is blown out, but that's a lot of flow to try to expose.

Which trailhead did you start from? There are multiple starting points on that trail...

there are 2 starting points from the one end and I guess you can access the trail from the top of the ridge on the other end.

Note: This waterfall is not scene by a trail or viewpoint.....you can only see it through the trees at best....we had to hike, climb, slide on our butts down the hill to get to it.....I have a 2 foot scrape on my leg to prove I did it as most of the fallen trees are rotten....

yes....the waterfall book is wrong as I have the same one.....I also would like to go back up there and check it out again and get a better idea of where I was....I was with a friend so its really hard to say...I was just too excited to be seeing all these new places to really pay attention to the area!!
