a colleague of mine wants to sell his 'magic bag' to me. I would like to know how much of magic-power has it got...
1. A 6x9 Linhof Color, in a very good condition...probably needs a little oiling here and there. He will do that. This is not a bad camera...but not sure it is for me. What interests me is the content other than this -
1b. Camera comes with 4 to 5 6x9 cassettes, cut film holder, super rolex back 6x7, and a kind-of-viewfinder (I guess, Danny Burk uses this kind of THING) like most SLR cameras have, extra balgen (what is the english word for this)
2. Nikkor 150/5.6W, in copal 0, linhof plate
3. Zeiss Opton Tessar, 105/3.5T, linhof plate
3. Schneider Kreauznach Super Angulon, 65/1:8,recessed plate linhof
4. Schneider Kreauznach Super Angulon, 47/5.6,recessed plate linhof and MC center filter Schneider
5 Schneider Kreauznach tele.xenar 180/5.5 linhof plate
6. Schneider Kreauznach componon 150/5.6 linhof plate
I'm not sure if this camera is for me. I really like ShenHao. But some lenses are too good to resist. I was looking for Nikkor for some time.
The bag also contains a Leicaflex SL2 and 50mm sumicronR (old, leitz) and an old macro/tele (telyt 20cm with novoflex balgen for focussing, this is fun thing) lense from leica. I have a possibility to get it for about 1500 Euro. I knew none of the items till yesterday except Nikkor lense. Can you tell me if this is the right price.
Lenses are in very good condition, shutter is fine, I have checked myself. He will also add an old Telomar 240mm from zeiss after replacing copal 0 shutter. He was working at leitz for some time, so he knows about the lenses for sure.
PLEASE HELP ME me to make the decision!!!
Danke Schön!

The 6x9 will be a jump in quality from what you have now. The lenses are the main thing, and most of them will work (i.e. have enough coverage) with a 4x5 system too. You could easily get something like a used Cambo 45NX monorail camera for a couple of hundred dollars at some time in the future.
I would guess that some of the lenses are non-coated and would work best for b&w. Some might be single coated and will work OK for color too. The one that says "MC" is multicoated and is a more modern type. That is a heck of a lot of lenses (never mind the camera even) for that little money.
Thanks Kent,
That was my problem. These lenses are old and I have rarely seen them on Eb*y Germany. I searched interent too. I'm told that atleast three of these lenses will work with 4x5. I also want to do BW so the lenses might be good irrespective of coating.
Prashant, just jump in and you'll sort things out in the future. Both Super Angulons are enough to make me nervous (and 65 will work as 5x4 lens too, but not 47)! Componon is enlarger lens, but this things work nice as macro lens. Linhof Colour is something like Techinca mated with monorail. It suppose to be light but still very monoraily. A Norwegian colleague of mine swears by it. 6x9 sheet transparency film might be a problem to find, but if you are interested in B&W it's a winner combination. On the other hand you have Super Rollex in your bag for transparencies.
Marko,
I'm JUMPING IN. I checked all the items again today. I can sell off some lenses and keep the rest. May be even camera. The camera is perhaps not for me...my problem is packing it in backpack. However three lenses and tidbits are interesting enough. I'm not interested in Leica, can go to eb*y.

I've only had my Shen Hao a couple of weeks, but have used it at least four times. I've already got some sheets back from the lab. This is a truly great camera, and probably my biggest bargain considering I paid $560 and got some nice accessories. It's very fun to use and easy to carry and set up. I probably shouldn't have waited so long to get one.
Prashan, what kind of rucksack do you have? I had troubles packing my Arca, but when I found the right combination of disassembling and geometry, it just slips into Tamrack 787 rucksack.
Thanks Kent and MArko again,
Marko I have lowepro bag like Rick. I tried to pack this monorail into my pack, it is difficult and takes a lot of space. Actually it is the optical bank...camera itself is small. Shen-hao fits nicely with cople of lense, and xt+zoom.
Thanks everybody!!
I got it. Just developed my favorite Ilford 50...BIG WOW. Although 6x7 negs/slides are not new to me...couple of lenses are Super Sharp...(Nikkor too) even at the lowest f.
Prashan, congratulations on your new toy! Have you find the way to pack the camera? I would at least try to work things out with this camera before spending money on another one (you might spend the money on nice photo trip to Slovenia in Autumn ).
you might spend the money on nice photo trip to Slovenia in Autumn>>>
Actually, I'm very much interested to come to Slovenia Marko. there is also a conference in october in Graz..so am very near. Just need to check timetable and wallet.
I already have a Shen-Hao. So only one can stay. I still can not afford to be a camera-collector.
Marko/Kent or others who will read,
Do you know how to keep the shutter open for following lenses?!
Super Angulon 47/5.6
Schneider Kreauznach tele.xenar 180/5.5
Zeiss Opton Tessar, 105/3.5T
I found no buttons/switches (for the lack of a term) to keep it open for composing. I could ask my colleague but he is out of station.
I just found out that linhof plates work perfectly fine with Shen-Hao. You can not ask for more.
Guy,
As long as I know, they are all Copal 0 shutter (thats what you want to know or?)
Keeping it on B and using cable release will work too...but perhaps not practical/awkward.
When you say there are no buttons or switches, does this mean it doesn't have a cocking lever either? I'm wondering if it's a Press (self-cocking) shutter.
Is there any inscription on it? Is there more than one thread for a cable release?
Ok, here it goes...
This is the xenar which has no knob/switch for opening the shutter where as tessar (100mm and not 105mm mentioned above) has a small knob at the right bottom. I'm going to sell the three lenses mentioned and the 65mm angulon too so it may not be a problem but still it is interesting to know.
On the Compur shutter you will need to use the B setting with a locking cable release. Not sure about this Copal shuttel, but I suspect it's the second grey lever (not the one with the arrow).
Hmm.. actually that lever looks like the cocking lever. My guess is the opening lever is that little knob on the lower right but it may be broken or missing a piece.
I first taught about Press shutter too. But from your pictures I realised, that you are talking about Compur shutter. I don't have a Synchro Compur shuttered lens, so I can only help you with this link:
http://www.skgrimes.com/compur/synchro/index.htm
http://www.skgrimes.com/compur/slftime/index.htm
If your shutters have a T setting it's far more practical for viewing than B, since one push of cable release open the shutter and another push closes it.
I dont find T setting on these three atleast.
Guy, about the copal thirs picture this has a small lever on the right bottom, that enables the opening of the shutter.
On the top two, the third small level does nothing.
Guy, according to S.K. Grimes site, the round button is activating the self-timer. If Prashant is talking about green leaver, it switches between X and M synchronisation for flash.

well, just few weeks back after selling all my MF outfit I got Shen Hao with a lense and xt.

One method that works on most shutters - set it to "B", open the aperture all the way, and use a locking cable release to hold it open while focusing.
