I went out on the Buffalo Pass road (about three miles up from Strawberry Park and just before Dry Lake Campground---County Rd 38) this morning for a couple of hours and here are some of the results. Sorry, the composite is kinda busy, but I wanted to show the range of flowers out there right now.
Abundant Columbine on north facing areas, as well as wild roses and several others as you can see. Just past Dry Lake Campground is a nice meadow filled with mule's ears and LPF's (little pink flowers). Sorry, I'm not up on my descriptions. Steamboat had big snow this winter, though it's been hot and dry lately. Still, the north facing vegetation areas are quite robust, and I was surprised to find so many flowers, especially Columbine.
Don't sell yourself short Rod, I like the collage!
Cool shots! Very nice to see how much variety there is out there right now! I was up in Steamboat back in Feb. and couldn't believe how much snow there was. I was hoping that would equal good flowers! Good start so far it looks like! Thanks for the update!
Hi Rod. Nice montage. I was up there a week ago and was fortunate to get shots very similar to yours. Buffalo Pass was closed at Dry Lake Campground then....is it open now?
Yes, the road is now open above Dry Lake CG, but not sure how far---I don't think it's open through the top of the divide yet. There's a little moraine about a mile or so past Dry Lake that hasn't even started to blossom yet (higher altitude), so I think there'll be blooms for weeks to come. However, it doesn't compare to say, Yankee Boy Basin in terms of either concentration or quantity. And virtually no grand views with flower foregrounds---but lots of intimate landscapes and closeups.
Rod-- nice collage. Will be up in SB next week with Rick for the Tournament. Will bring my photo gear and see if I can sneak away up to Buffalo Pass. Regards, Pat
