Slim PL + GND

What is the best way to mount a GND on the front of a slim polarizing filter that has no front threads? I use a 77mm slim filter mounted on the 67mm threads of a large format lens. Rarely do I ever want to use both a polarizer and a GND but last week was one of those times. I normally use a little bit of tape, however, I found out this is not really a good way to do it since the GND slid down about half way through my 7sec. exposure . Needless to say the shot didn't come out very well, but on a bright note I can redo it.

I normally just use a holder when I use a GND, but I can't without the threads and I feel I need to come up with a good solution, or maybe invest in a 77mm CPL with front threads - which I really do not want to do.

Thanks

Robert

Hi Robert,

What kind of holder are you using for the GND? I have a Cokin P holder and I put a polarizer (Singh Ray) in the rear slot which is designed for a rotating filter. I believe the Lee filter system has similar options. I think a polarizer that fits your holder would be a better choice than attaching the holder to the front of a conventional filter.

Cheers,

I use a cokin P filter attached to my non-slim polarizer. I was going to suggest tape. Perhaps all you need is better tape.

I'm using the Cokin P as well. I never knew the rear slot was designed for a rotating filter. I feel stupid for not having figured this out myself. I just attached it to my 90mm lens and it seems as though it will work out just fine. I'll give it a thorough test on Thursday.

I've had the Cokin for a few years and never really used it. Purchased it, chopped off the third slot then never put a filter in it. When I used only 35mm I found that tape worked out really well. Line it up and tape the filter to the side of the lens. With large format the lens design doesn't allow the same type of set up.

Sure wish I had asked this question a week ago when I knew the situation was upcoming.

Thanks guys I really appreciate it.

I usually just hand hold the GND (even for long exposures)
It takes a little practice but it works fine.
