Another fox shot
Fox (Vulpes vulpes) and Water Shrew (Neomys fodiens) – Essex, UK.

Canon EOS 1Ds MkII, 300/f2.8 IS, Gitzo 1548, Wimberley head.
Av exposure mode f6.3, 1/800, iso 500, AWB (converted to daylight in processing).
RAW image processed in Capture One; sharpened in Photoshop CS2 (amount = 100 percent; radius = 0.2; threshold = 0 applied five times); full frame.

Not had too much time for posting or commenting recently due to pressures of work and some family business to sort out, but I still try to drop in when I can.

This fox cub and one of its siblings were playing with a dead water shrew a couple of weekends ago – repeatedly throwing it up in the air and pouncing on it. Unfortunately, neither the light nor the setting, were particularly great.

If I was going to make a print from this, I would probably crop it a little tighter.

Hi Phil,

Great image, you caught the moment! Personally I think it works fine without the need for cropping tighter.

Were you in a hide, just out of interest?

Isn't this one of those competition winning shots, very charming, I bet the frog thinks otherwise.

An absolutely superb shot Phil, a real winner - pity there's no catchlight in that shrews eye though!

Hi Phil

Superb bit of action - love it. Agree with you re the crop - I would take a little from the bottom of the frame and even less from the right. Outstanding image!

Phil...

Another Superb Fox image.... the captured action is wonderful and portrays the playful antics of this youngster superbly, the setting doesn't bother me, this is how I normally see them.

Hi Phil

A brilliantly caught moment. I agree with your idea of the slightly tighter crop as there is just a bit too much empty space as is. But with the 1Dsmk2 you have plenty of cropping space, a great advantage when using a high megapixel camera.

cheers

Showing the same kind of psycho behaviour pattterns that cats enjoy.
Great behaviour shot.

I'd be interested to know what was wrong with the AWB when you had to correct it to daylight in C1.......I've never found a situation yet where this C1 setting improves what comes off the card.
