We're taking our anual trip to Walupt Lake this weekend. If you're in the area, please look us up! We'll be at the Walupt Lake campground in one of the two group sites. I'll be shooting during the day, and drinking single malt around the campfire.

Hi Curtis,

Do you have any specific hikes planned? I'd love to swing by and meet you and do some photos.

Unfortunately I don't really have a specific itinerary. Are you in Packwood? I could actually make a specific plan if I know you're coming.

I was thinking about trying to do Nanny Peak for a sunset, but one hike I'm going to do for sure is the Walupt Creek trail early one morning. I want to try to leave camp at 4:00a.m. and reach the creek crossing just before sunrise. There is a nice little meadow there, as well as some still water for reflections. Then beyond that, at about the 4 mile mark is an abslutely gorgeous alpine meadow at about 6,000 feet, with a lake smack in the middle of it. This is an all-day trek for me. I did that hike about 2 years ago and I left at 5a.m. and returned to camp about 2p.m. My dog plopped down, and didn't get up except to drink water untill the next morning!

Nanny Peak is about 2.5 miles each way. You can see Hood, Adams, St Helens, and Rainier is right in your face! it will fill the frame at 200mm on a "full frame" camera.

One thing to remember when hiking with me. I'm 45, but I've got the knees of a 70yr old man so I hike kinda slow...

Yes, I'm in Packwood. I'm up for anything. I appreciate learning about new spots up here.

I might head to Portland for the 4th so if we could do something earlier in your stay, that would be great.
