Some time ago I said that Canon will announce a new 1D...it looks like I was wrong :-/
I just spoke with a source that I consider *very* reliable and he stated that the only new Canon camera this year will be the 400D (a minor update of the 350D). Canon will announce some very nice new L lenses (one of that is a new wide angle), too, but the next 1D is going to be announced next year.
The good news is that the specs are close to what I was previously told (a Foveon-like sensor with a resolution par to 22 megapixel, new AF, fast FPS - surely at least 5FPS, maybe 8).
I have no idea about why Canon has choosen that kind of sensor...so far, the Foveon sensors don't look very impressive, they have an average resolution and relatively high noise. I guess they have found a way to get much better results, I'm really curious to see it.
I've seen posted on other sites that Canon will not use the Foveon sensor we've all heard of before, but rather has developed an in-house technology for some time that is similar to the principles of the Foveon (each pixel site captures red, green and blue data)...
Hi Tom,
I'm almost sure it is a zoom. It may be a 14-28, or a new design of the 16-35, but I don't have any sure info about the exact focal length. If it is a 14-28, I'll buy it, otherwise I'll go for the Sigma 12-24, that is wildly wide on fullframe!
I'll spoke again to my source by the second week of July, I'll try to gather some more info!
I have postponed getting a new camera in anticiparion of the anouncement of the next version of the 1D (the Mark III?) I was hoping that it would be soon and that the price would follow the trend of the past, I.e. that it would decrease somewhat. My 10D has some shortcomings, so I'd like to replace it and I'd like to replace it with a camera with the robust reputation of the 1 series.
I do hope the price doesn't move in the direction of the 1Ds. If it does, I'll probably have to settle for a 5D. In the meantime, I haven't been overwhelmed by camera lust yet.
I had two different info about the price, one said 5k, the other 8k...another thing that I need to ask to my new source ;-)
Of course the new sensor is FF - all Canon pro bodies will be FF, while the "cheaper" cameras will be 1.6x. The 1DN is the last 1.3x camera, even though it is going to remain in production for some time, in particular if the new 1D is 8k.
Please tell me that your source will indicate either a redesign of 100-400L IS, or reintroduction of a modernized, somewhat affordable 100-300L 5.6 to work in combination with the 24-105L introduced last year!
Any indication if the new 1D will write 8 or more FPS? I could have bought the IDs MkII but I wanted the faster frame rate of the MkII N for equestrian events.
Oh, I stumbled onto a thread on "that other forum" that indicated that the Apple store was selling 1Ds MkII for $3999 USD. Of course when I went to the site to check for myself there were none left in stock. Crossing my fingers hoping to see something similar come along for the MkII N. Nobody is discounting those things yet...
Hi Kelly,
I said all I know in the first post...surely at least 5FPS, maybe 8...maybe. I'll speak again with my source next week, I hope to get more info, for me FPS is crucial...if it is for sure 8FPS, I'll save for it, otherwise I might consider to buy now the much cheaper 1DN.
The 1Ds2 at 4k was a typo (check the post at DPR for more info).

this means there will be no 5D for me this year.
