Deathly quiet on the MWNP. So what is everyone doing to occupy their summer?

I'll start. I got back a few weeks ago from a multi-week trip out west. Visited areas such as Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park, Moab area, Capitol Reef and the Grand Staircase; parts in-between and spent some time in SW Colorado.

Now I'm spending my time staring at a monitor editing the images from that trip as well as some Smoky Mountains spring photos.

Some family photo sessions here and there...but generally thinking/planning a week-long U.P. fall colors trip and hoping I get all my editing done by then!

Here's one of my favorites so far this summer.

Lots of image editing. Even more shooting, to completely undo any attempts to catch up on the image editting. Research marketing. Hunt down a couple of people to present at a camera club here in Columbus in the Fall (anyone interested?!?).

Maybe see a friend or two. Get some running in, to burn out stress.

Yeah, it is going to be a busy summer.

Any interest for an informal meeting at an Ohio State Park (Buck Creek, perhaps).

Well you asked. . .

I've hardly picked up my camera over the last 2 months or more. I did manage to shoot 2 natural bridges in a cave a couple of weeks ago. As I understand it, they are very rare.

I've participated in 6 artshows in the last 2 months and have found the market to be pretty dead around here. Both for me and the gallery that shows my work. Lots of lookers, but no buyers. I've got one this Friday at the Pendleton Art Center in Cincinnati for Final Friday.

I'm doing a cave photography presentation for our grotto next friday, and I haven't started putting it together yet. ;-) just lots of thumbnail sketeches. The REAL presentation is to the TriState Photographic Society in September, followed up with a cave photo trip to an old commercial cave in KY. When plans are definite, I'll post some info here for anyone who wants to come along. Dan, let me know if you think your group would be interested in the program.

August, I head to Washington State for the NSS Cave Photography Salon/competiton at WWU and plan to spend most of the week shooting around Bellinghan/Olympia. The day after we fly back, I'm doing Art on the Commons in Kettering.

I need to put together another underground shoot or two before the competiton.

September, the last week, we are headed to the Canadian Rockies, probably mostly around Jasper but it will depend on the weather/leaves.

My wife's parents have had some serious health concerns over the last few months and that has made all the above that much more difficult with lots of worry and uncertainty. I am giving up my position as editor for the grotto after 5 years. It's just too much with both of us working full time jobs, and the other groups/conservancies that I volunteer for/help.

I plan to enjoy learning how to use the Minolta 7D I finally was able to get. So far I have really enjoyed shooting with it. We also plan to do a little camping here in the central UP, some of which we have already done. Also camping in the Keewenaw Peninsula. Other activities include geocaching, mountain bike rides, trail sweep behind the Grand Island Marathon July 29, Ore-to-Shore Mountain Bike Epic in August, Tour Da Woods Mountain Bike Challenge September 9, fall color photo stuff last week of September and first 2 weeks of October, kids soccer and Detroit Tigers baseball.
It would be great if we might be able to have a little gathering to shoot fall color in the UP.

Well it appears that with the pace I'm going I'll still be working on my website by summers end! This is taken way longer than I originally anticipated.

Take that time restraint out of the picture and I have a few day trips planned as soon as I get the proper weather conditions. In August I'll be heading out west ,to a currently undecided location for some backpacking mixed with a little photography. Once the Aug. trip is over I'll be looking forward to the fall season.

I do hope everyone enjoys their summer

I spent a week in the Columbia River Gorge/Cannon Beach the first of June. Bought a vehicle in Portland Oregon, dropped my wife off at the airport and started sight seeing. My first stop was in Salt Lake City, in route to visit fellow NPNer Bret Edge in Moab Utah. I spent a few days with him photographing Canyonlands NP and Arches NP. After leaving there I spent time in the San Juan Mts (southern Colorado) before making my way up to Mt. Evans where I photograhed Mt Goats. About 2 weeks later and thousand images I made it back to Ohio.

A week from tomorrow I will be kicked back on the the beach watching the waves crash in from the Atlantic. We get a house on Oak Island NC every summer with the whole family. Its great. I will actually be about 10 miles from the Green Swamp Nature Preserve so I am sure I will head over there a couple of times. When we leave there we are heading south to photograph some of the parks in SC (Huntington beach and Hunting Island for sure).

Then in early August we are heading NE to Nova Scotia/Maine for a 2 week photography trip. I have two shows to get ready for in September. It has been quite busy and only looks to be getting better.

Scott M.,
I think quite a few of us will be making the trek to the UP for some colors. As it nears we should pick a location and date...possibly Porcupine Mountains?

Josh,
Your trip was very close to what I did. Only I didn't call Bret because my wife and I were fighting off a nasty head cold and didn't want to spread it :(

Cindy, As you plan your UP trip, you might want to consider starting in the west. The west tends to get the fall color going a few days earlier than here in the central UP.

Hi everyone, so far this summer I spent a week in the U.P., Porcupine Mountains and Keweenaw Penninsula. Black Flies were the worst I've ever seen at the Porkies, other than that had a great time and shoot a lot of the copper mine ruins.

Late August I will be heading to MN to shoot Black Bears and then in November going to Churchill to shoot Polar Bears. In between I'm doing lots of Weddings to pay for it all!

Have a great summer!

The next few months are going to be spent scanning old slides and edititing digital files while I recover from knee surgery. I am actually enjoying this a lot and my PhotoPortfolio is improving in quality daily. My next major trip will be to the Smokies/Blue Ridge Pkwy for some fall colors the 3rd week of October. I'm sure I'll get out for some local bird photography between now and then.

Great image Jon and enjoy the summer.
