Spitsbergen Puffin
Just came back from 5 days at Svalbard (Spitsbergen)! Quite a fantastic place with great birds and mammals. This is my first time ever seeing a Puffin. They were very few, and all was sitting on the steep cliffs. They still haven't got chicks, so no chances of seeing them with the beak full of sandeels

The Spitsbergen Puffin is another subspecie than the ones often seen in UK/Europe. I was quite happy of just getting this close to one.

20D + 500/4, iso400. Nearly full frame.

Very nice image Helge. I am not totally convinced about the pose of the bird. Spitsbergen is a place i do need to go as well...one day...what mammals did you encounter?

Hi Rene, I saw plenty of Svalbard Reindeer and Polar Fox. Both species were very photogenic. I luckily didn't see any Polar Bears. I was camping out with limited bear protection (just a Rifle which I don't know how to use... and some line/rope with fireworks around the tent). I think if I had seen a Polar Bear I wouldn't have been able to sleep at all...

Hello Helge
Its a lovely image of the puffin, seems to have an overall cyan cast on my monitor.
Best wishes

Nice, Colour-cast here as well.

Perhaps you will post some 'polar fox' ?

Unusual pose, but it works for me. Very nicely exposed and composed. I can't see the cast particularly. Look forward to more posts from your visit.

Nice shot but not too keen on the pose, myself.
I see colour cast too.

Having spent some time with these in the UK recently - great shot. I am getting the slight blue colour cast on my monitors, but do like the unusual pose on this popular subject.
