Help – Windows XP and BSOD!

My Windows XP Home PC, running a P IV chip at 2.8 GHz, with 1.25 Gb RAM, was operating fine until sometime on Saturday. When I got home late Sat night, I found the BSOD with an error message stating "Unmountable_Boot_Volume" waiting for me. After some time, I managed to boot from my Windows XP CD and got to the Recovery Console and ran chkdsk /r. This managed to get through about 50% when an error message was returned stating, "One or more unrecoverable errors has been detected".

Any ideas as to what is going on? Is my HD fried? There is some mention on the net that I need to clear some flags that are apparently telling the system my drive is not bootable - is there an easy way to do this?

Thanks for the help.

HD = Dead. Hope you are diligent about doing backups. Chkdsk does not care if your HD is bootable or not. It seems to be finding damaged sectors that, unfortunately, may include some of your system files.

Sorry to hear about your hard drive :frown: I had that happen to mine about a year ago and recovered nearly all of my files with File Scavenger software. Once recovered, they didn't have their original names but I got them back. I hope you have a positive outcome too..
