Whitmore Falls
Was lucky enough to be in Lake City for the 4th...but only had one short photo opportunity (adjusting to life with a 1 year old!)

Ran out to Whitmore Falls (just off the road toward Engineer Pass, beyond Capital City). Lots of water, lots of flowers. I'm bummed we didn't quite make it to American Basin this year...sort of a July 4 tradition...

Came home via Ohio Pass/Keblar Pass - wow! Lots of flowers out! Even ran across a huge flock of sheep in the aspens running free (free range mutton??) Pretty cool to see the sheep in the aspens among the ferns and flowers! Man, I love this state!

Happy 4th! (or 5th, as it may be...) :toast:

Only had time for some quick handheld shots of the sheep...not quite as exciting as Rick's "meese", but still not something you see everyday (unless you happen to be a shepherd, I guess...) Couldn't get any of them to look up...maybe my sheep call needs a little work...

Not Baaaaaaad not Baaaaad at all! LOL I like the waterfall a lot dispite the tonal range being a bit shallow for the distance you have between you and the main fall..

Jamie,

I don't know if I can put my finger on what I really like about this waterfall shot, but it looks really great to me. Maybe it is the dark and light contrast (almost B&W) at the falls then moving out to more colors in the water and the land as my eye follows it forward. It is captivating.

Ok, now I have to go there  It looks like you may have had overcast skys. What time of the day did you shoot? Also is there any way to get to this location without a 4x4? I was reading that Engineer Pass is not that bad a road here:

Does anyone get there in a standard car or van?

Thanks,
Derek

Thanks, Derek!

It was actually a very nice, sunny morning, but the sun had not quite crept down into this part of the valley yet. I think it was about 9:00 am.

The road to the falls is quite accessible by car...this is quite a bit before Engineer Pass (coming from Lake City/Lake San Cristobal). It is just beyond the ghost town remains of Capitol City (I think trailheads for Uncompahgre are nearby - but I've not climed it so I'm not exactly sure...)

There is a large pullout near the falls with a sign that points to the trail that takes you down to an overlook. Continue past the overlook and you can hike to river edge at the bottom.

I noticed the posted version of this photo does look a little flat...there seems to be more detail/color variation in the original. I'm not that good in PS and used a "save for Web" feature...hmmm...all part of the learning curve!
