Securing an L bracket in clamp

Hi all,

Just got my ordered RRS L bracket for my 30D in, and also the ordered BH-1 from Kirk. Now I wonder how one can make that set-up a little more secure, since I see myself already crying when the whole camera slides out of the clamp, because I did not tighten it too well.

I'd guess there must be some sort of bolt available, that we could but in the tapped holes from the bracket?

Jacco, some clamps have a detent pin for added security. I don't know if your BH-1 comes with it, but you can get after-market clamps from Kirk, RRS, Acratech, and others that support it.

Hmm.. actually I didn't see one from Kirk. Here's one from Acratech:

Clamp with detent pin

Thanks Guy, indeed the standard clamp on the BH-1 does not have a detent pin, I still wonder only what the tapped holes are for, in the bottom and side of the bracket, as seen here:

For the rest I am amazed by the quality of this combo, compared to the previous Manfrotto ballhead I have. This stays put where i had set it, when locking the ball ;-)

Jacco,
I've got a BH-1 and for what it's worth I think it's a great piece of gear. It is a bit on the heavy side but it's well built and works just like the day I got it (second hand too). The weight of the BH-1 and my Gitzo 1224 tripod (non carbon) is an issue on hikes in the mountains. I just suck it up and every now and then call them by a nickname that is not repeatable here! Sorry I don't have any advice to pass on with regards to the clamp. At least the L clamp will keep everything near the C of G and then it's just a case of always taking the time to tighten the clamp properly. Good luck with the package. It's a solid piece of kit and should do you well. By the way, I don't know if you follow the Tour but in case you do let me say it was a shame what happened to Dekker. I guess the hopes of the Netherlands rest on Michael Boogerd. I'm going to be leaving on Saturday to meet up with the Tour in Bordeaux and follow them through the Pyrennes. I'm really excited about being there roadside for the legendary l'Alpe d'Huez stage. It's sure to be a blast with many great photo opportunities!
