I wrote asking for advise on kayak photography. LL Bean was having a sale so I bought one on Monday. I practiced twice without a camera - pretty easy.

I went on a pond with my kayak and camera for the first time yesterday. It was cloudy at 7:30 a.m. and when the sun came out, it was after 10:00 - so the light wasn't great. I was more interested in finding loons and trying the camera.

There was only 1 loon on the pond, but that was o.k. I would have been disappointed if there had been none. At times, it wanted to keep its distance while at other times it was too close. I was trying to keep the kayak in one place, not have it rotate, focus and shoot. I used no exposure compensation (should have used -.3) and left the f stop at 5.6. In most shots I did not even think what the zoom lens was at either. I guess I was kind of nervous.

The close shots were too close, but I like to crop for 11 by 15 and there was no room to "compose" at my computer. It was either show the full loon or cut off park of it.

Do you know what the loon is doing in the last photo?

Allan.....

Nice shots of the loons. I have seen and photographed loons doing what you asked about in the last photo......It seems to me to be a form of stretching....at least that's my observation and two cents worth.
