Flash selection for Fuji S3 Pro
I'm hoping someone out there can help, I'm having quite a bit of difficulty here. Basically I need a new flash... i upgraded from a Fuji S2 to S3. My Nikon SB-26 worked great w/ the S2 but doesn't on the S3.

I'm clueless about all of options available. I typically use Sigma primes (20 & 105) and have a Nikon 50mm prime. I don't think I have any of the D lenses, or need for D-TTL, etc.

Basically, what I want is the ability to shoot TTL and have a -1.5 or -1.7 ev flash exposure control... that's it.

A sales rep at a local store suggested a Metz 54, but we couldn't hook it up to an S3 body to play around with. I should bring my camera in to try it out.

Any advise out there?

ps the latest firmware upgrade to the S3 (v2.18) states that it has "enhanced compatibility w/ Nikon Flashes." But no specifics at all... I've read something about color accuracy at slow shutter speeds, but that's it. Any thoughts on that too?

I guess I'm confused why your SB-26 is giving you problems because if I'm reading the chart correctly, it is about the most compatible of all the flashes. We have almost no experience with the S3, but tons (we own four) with the S2. They give brilliant performance with several each of SB-24, SB-25, and SB-28. I've relegated my S2 to backup and am using a D2X now along with the SB-800. Haven't turned on the S2 since I got the D2X, so I can't say how it works with the SB-800.

I know none of that helps, but I'm rather surprised at your initial problem. We use several Metz with our MF gear, but I can't tell you which models right now. I can say that they have always given good performance on any camera we have strapped them to.

Why not try out the SB800. From what I've read, I'd be led to believe it's the greatest flash ever made. I'd be careful to make sure the 3rd party flashes are compatible. I used to be happy with the -1.7 gelled fill flash, until I discovered the omnibounce diffuser. Now I just use full flash thru the omnibounce and the light looks less harsh.

The SB-26 works, but non-TTL mode only and won't support flash exposure compensation.

Mmmm. That would be a problem for me too. I'd get on the line with Fuji and ask which specific strobes give you the TTL and compensation. If none, my impressions of Fuji and the S3 dropped a notch because they aimed that body squarely at the pro market.

I use the SB600 with my D2X, and have been satisfied. It will adjust to +/- 3 EV and is a good bit less expensive than the SB800. The SB800 certainly has more capability, but I just mine 99% for fill flash.
