Went out for my first real dragon and damsel hunt on Sunday morning, other things have been getting in the way so far this year...
As commented on in a previous thread numbers seem to be a lot lower than in previous years, either that or I am well and truly out of practice at spotting them...
Most of the ones I found were either low down in the vegitation or in inaccessable spots. Difficult to maintain reasonable DoF whilst trying to make the bg as non distracting as possible...
Hi Phil,
I haven't seen one of these yet this year, but I seem to remember we're always a week or so behind you southeners. Great shot, I don't mind the background nothing bright there to distract.
Hi Phil, I have just come back from photographing the common darter at my local pond but no success, mine just not sharp enough.
As Tim says the background is fine........nice sharp image of a difficult subject

Hi Phil
Excellent shot, I think you have made the most of the conditions, the background is fine. Maybe the shot would have a bit more impact with a cleaner background but sometimes it is nice to show the habitat clearly.
A tricky angle to focus at but it looks like you have nailed the focus point around the head and shoulder area. Good light too.
I had another session bug hunting yesterday evening and there is certainly a skill to spotting subjects amongst large areas of flowers, grass and vegetation.
Hello Phil
I went back to the pond today and was delighted with the vast assortment of dragons, damsels, beetles and other assorted insects, I even managed some shots of the common darter, so no shortage of "bugs" here I'm pleased to report.
Good image, I think it looks right with the BG.
Best wishes
Phil
