Cheap Wireless Remote for 5D?

I'm looking for a cheap and simple wireless remote for my 5D. All I need is a remote with one simple button that releases the shutter. I used to use the $20 RC-1 with my Rebel XT and it worked great. Now WHY the heck doesn't Canon have a simple and cheap remote for the 5D? All I can find is a clunky LC-5 remote that costs about $500 and does waaaaaaaaaay more than is necessary. Not only that, you have to attach an additional clunky device to the camera just to make it work. Does the 5D not have built in wireless features like the inferior Rebel XT? What is going on? Is Canon after my last dime again or is there some "secret" remote that I can't even find using Google? :frown:

You just found the number one reason to stay away from Canon's upper tier camera's. They charge for accessories, even ones that you paid less than $30 for previously, like they are all upper tier too and they are usually much bulkier to boot. Why they don't have compatible accessories across all lines is beyond me; wait a sec they are also after your last dime.

I have that same RC-1 remote, does everything you would ever want in a remote, even 20ft away. Had it since 1995 and it's still going strong. The next camera I buy will have to work with it, or something similar, if Canon wants my money.

Sorry to rant, just one of my pet peeves. Good luck finding an alternative.

It's been a while since I looked into this so my details are a little vague, but there are some cheaper Chinese knock-offs of the Canon remotes that are on eBay. I think you can pick up the wired shutter trip for less than $20.

Roger, I realize that I can pick up the wired version for $20. However, I'm looking for a wireless remote. Craig, Canon also infuriates me when they do this. However, I'm not going to sacrifice shooting with a 5D over a remote.

Scott, I know what your saying. If I shot more than I currently do I may have a different opinion, but I don't do this except for a hobby and with 2 kids under 3 I don't have much time to do the hobby any more. I'm also pretty happy with the stitched resolution I get from 35mm scans or XT digital shots. It's just drives me nuts to know that they have better options in the low end camera's than the upper ones. To this day I still wonder why they don't allow that remote on each and every camera they sell; it's that good/small/unique. :frown:

Good luck in your search and I hope you don't have to spend the extra $500 on top of the 5D price too.

Nikon did the same thing with the D2X. I had a nice $25 wireless remote for the D70, and had to pay $50 for a wired remote for the D2X. I guess they figure anyone willing to pay for a high end DSLR will also pay big bucks for what should be a simple, inexpensive accessory....

Scott - I vaguely remember that the store at another forum actually www.naturescapes.net as a third party remote for Canon. I remember them talking about it and they did not have the equivalent for Nikon which I thought was to bad.

I just checked their store and I could not find it, maybe I remember the incorrect forum.

Did you look at eBay? I remember a Chinese company advertising there with wireless remotes.

A less than $500 alternative might be the "Zigview"-
combination live LCD/timer/remote/motion detector,etc
