Any joy for anyone on forum? some or one of my photos got to semi-final stage, not sure whether this means much or not. perhaps Phil can enlighten?
interesting looking at winning entries over past few years. the standard seems to have jumped up a couple of notches in past 2 years IMHO. Truly awe-inspiring photography.

Not had feedback on my digital entries (letter says this would come by email) but had a trannie pic in the final round. Have come close over the last six years, just need to go that little bit further

I'd say that the standard has slipped in the last three years, especially when picking the winner. I didn't rate the captive gorilla or the starling flocks that won in 2003 and 2005, but the shark/bait ball was an undeniable stunner. The fact that I enter and would love to be commended speaks volumes tho'..

I don't think anyone who has won or been commended can identify themselves until the results are announced, so you'll not find much success here for a while at least.

Update: just got my email confirmation. Says some of my digital images made it to the final round, but doesn't tell me which  Hey ho, there's always next year

Hi,

Sorry but my lips are sealed at the moment.... untill the official announcements are made. I have seen the winning entries , I wasn't even allowed to send a crop from an image to Gretag Macbeth for them to check as we were having problems producing a proof print.

An interesting fact...

Of 95 winning entries 85 of those were digital.

All the best

Phil

Hi Phil

That is an interesting statistic, 95 winning entries 85 of those were digital.

I have been a bit surprised from the last two years how many film images were still submitted to the competition, or least seen in the final exhibition.

I guess it takes a couple of years for the digital SLR effect to filter through to the competition as many of the entries will have been taken over 12 months ago, if not longer.

Always an enjoyable competition and I am looking forward to seeing this years images.

cheers

Sean

Phil,

Too much to ask whether you're impressed with the standard this year?

Hi Andrew,

Attempt at a guarded answer.....

Some yes, some no, some I wonder about the judges.....

Overall I think my impressions were favourable, but others opinions might and should differ...

All the best

 learning how to wobble along the fence without falling off it eh Phil? :jump::biggrin:

As always, come the announcements it will be interesting to see the choices ~ and hopefully to hear a bit of the judges rationale behind them too.

Phil,

The lynch mod  will be out if somebody doesn't change the digital guidelines re cropping next year and set a raw minimum non-interped pixel amount accepted from digital camera; also, and interestingly, potentially regardless of shape.

i.e. If I could submit a 35mm slide out of a LF print then... why can I not put in a 6M images taken from a 17M Camera... type of arguement..

In hand Tom....... The WPOY office took guidelines from the printers and interpreted them literally..... fingers crossed we can get that to be more realistic. I have spoken quite extensively to them about this.

All the best
