I was cleaning my camera tonight and took my 17-40 off the body and cleaned it fine and all, then while lining up the red dots to mount the lens I heard a rattle inside the lens....? It kinda pisses me off now especially, I baby my stuff and it's less than a month old. I know I can send it back to Canon to get fixed since it is under warranty and all, but I don't think they'll get it back to me in time for Rainier!! It seems to work just fine, do you think it could wait til I get back? Has anyone had this problem before?
Thanks
Jeremy

It does sound troubling, but if it's working ok, I'd probably wait till I got back if it were me.
Jeremy, If you've got a trip planned, and you think the lens might fail just send it in to the service center now and get a rental lens for the day or week of your trip. I'd hate to miss an opportunity by chancing to take a lens that might stop functioning.
Just my $.02
I had a 17-40 for a couple of years and when they first came out and never had any problems with it.
If it works and it doesn't seem like you're doing obvious damage to it when you use it, I'd wait till after Rainier to send it in.

You're spending like a week+ up there right? If it breaks, drive to Seattle and rent one, or rent one before hand just in case if you're really worried about it. My 17-40 has rattled a bit for years and it sounds similar to your problem. Don't know what it is and it works fine. Funny thing, it still has a slight rattle after coming back from the service facility after I drowned it. Probably just a loose seal or ring inside somewhere. If it's functioning fine, it's not a glass element - those are placed in there very, very securely.

Yeah....I calmed down a bit..lol I'll just take it and see what happens. Its under warranty for when I get back and I also have all my stuff way insured. It'll be fine I think. If it does break down I'll blast home mid week say hi to the fams and rent one at Pro Photo.
I've also heard bad stories about Canon service...although I had a camera and lens way back in my film days that I left on top of the car. I heard a slide and a thud...looked in my rear view mirror and freaked out. I had ratttling for years and still took sharp images. If it does crap out on you, you could run to Seattle...or you could buy one online, then resell it afterwards, just in case...

Yep...I'll do that maybe. I also have the 24-70L, which on a FF body isn't that bad. It's just heavy as hell for backpacking with.
Good luck Jeremy - to give a comparison - my 'ordinary' 20-35 lens has got sand in it and still works fine - but for the slightly noisy focusing. So I guess a rattle on the 17-40 shouldn't be an issue.

I would take it and I also not discount Canon Service. Irvine turned my 5D in one day for cleaning.
Good luck,
Mike
