Very nice Grey Heron portrait, nicely exposed and sharp, minor nits, I would prefer more space in front of the bird and less behind so that it is looking into the image rather than out, also a touch more room at the bottom for the virtual feet....
A nice sharp portrait and well exposed with a good pose by the heron. Nice beady eye too.
You have done well in the conditions, bright sunlight and awkward location, and a nice job of cloning out the moorhen, certainly not obvious on first look at the image.
The background is not too attractive so if you have this type of opportunity again always think about the background, the direction of the light, and your position first before snapping away. Sometimes in the heat of the moment you take photo's without considering the full composition. It is something I have learnt over time, grab some quick snaps if you think your subject is about to depart, but if not try to arrange the composition to make best use of the available conditions.
good effort though. As you live in Bournemouth I would recommend a boat trip to Brownsea Island (I think you can go from the pier). An excellent location to view wading birds and other wildlife, e.g. terns. And if you think Heron's are cool wait to you see some Little Egrets.
I agree with you Sean about the background, wasn't easy cos on one side of the pond you have a clear view, the other is completely blocked by bushes and stuff! lol! I would have preferred him to have been on the other side of the road to be honest, in the greener area, never mind.
Yes, I want to go to Brownsea Island this year if I get the chance, I need to take my mobility scooter though cos I can't walk very well so will have to enquire as to whether the boats can take it. Or whether they have any for hire for the day once I'm over there, that would be good.

Lovely sharp portrait of a spectacular bird. Keep on striving for the "perfect" shot!

5 repliesThis was taken at Coy Pond in Bournemouth, it just happened to be there over the weekend, not seen it since.
There is some post processing due to a moorhen blocking the shot but hopefully I have done a good job of cloning it out.

Well done, I like it.
