A great subject nicely captured, good pose and eye contact with the owl. Looks sharp too given the use of the 2x TC. F11 seems a bit overkill, maybe f8 and ISO 200 would have been a better combination for image quality. Also surprised you used +1 compensation for the exposure, never really had to do that myself with a Canon camera, it's already pretty good at over exposure. Seems to work well here though.
Sweet shot. Amazing what turns up in the s**t
As to whether the non IS 300 is as sharp as the IS one...nothing in it, but it's easier to get sharper shots with the IS one when handholding.
I use the non IS one and have never found it lacking in sharpness. I have also used the IS version and never found that lacking in sharpness either. Both are designed for shooting wide open, so even at 2.8 there is no noticable difference in sharpness than from say a stop or two down. Using a 1.4x on them delivers results that are every bit as good as w/o. Using the 2x does need a bit of contrast boost and also tends to get a touch soft around the edges when wide open.....not bad but enough to make me think twice about printing shots from that combo to very large size
Hello Antony
An excellent result for your efforts. The colours are spot on, and the detail is excellent. I have to disagree with Sean on this one, I think your F stop was dead right, with the whole bird looking nice and sharp.
Best wishes
Phil
I've been spending alot of time round a dung heap as well, photographing Grass Snakes. I'll keep my eyes open for the Little Owl's now I presume he/she was after worms??

Perhaps someone can advise?
Is the Canon 300mm f2.8 'NON IS' version as sharp as the 'IS' version?

P.S a couple of other images from the sequence can be found here
