Photo Storage in the Field. . .iPod?

My Epson P2000 kicked the bucket. I think the directory was scrambled when my system crashed during a download to my computer. It went into a never ending reset cycle. Epson is repairing it, but I doubt I get it back in time for the trip. I leave next Friday for the NSS Convention in Bellingham for their cave photography competition.

Anyway, I still have my 5G 60GB video iPod for storage. Does anyone have any experience with transfering CFs to an iPod. I've heard that you can use the Apple direct link dock connection and some USB 2 card readers, but then heard a 2GB card is about the maximum the battery can take, which for me is a drop in the bucket. . .

I just got a Western Digital 500GB HD so I plan on taking one of my old WD 160GB Mediacenter drives and my iPod as a dual backup made by downloading through my laptop to the drives. But that doesn't help shooting in the field away from power when my Epson was the most useful. Any suggestions?

I'm very broke at the moment between paying for flights, vehicle rentals, renting a new studio space for artshows. . .otherwise I would stock up on CF cards. I have about 6GB in cards now. And may try to eek out another 2GB, I think I saw them for about $80 for an Ultra II.

Rob, I saw a 2GB Ultra II on sale for $57 or 58 today. Go to pricegrabber.com. http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=2518535/search=Compact+Flash+Cards
The Memory Outlet ships for free and you should receive it before next Fri. Don't know the answer on the iPod. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Have you ordered from Memory Outlet before? That does sound like a good deal. Those top of the list stores always make me nervous when dealing with electronics. . .

Just checked their ratings and there are several recent posts about their 2GB cards being fakes. . .

No personal experience but I met a lady on a recent trip who was using that solution (except that instead of a card reader she had a cord direct from camera to ipod). She said it was very convenient and worked well but the battery life was so bad that she would never download unless she was right by a power outlet!

Rob, I haven't used that store before. I read the reviews and saw the two fraud cards. Strange, since overall reviews were very positive. Still if you want to play it safe, I've used Zip Zoom Fly without a snag, although price is $72.

The solution to the iPod power problem could be an inverter for your car. Assuming you'll be near your car for the downloads.
Does anyone know which card readers will work with the 60G video iPod? I'd rather not plug the camera into my iPod, plus I don't even know if the D200 is compatible.

I just bumped into this review of the Apple Camera Connector and he is using a Belkin USB 2 card reader.

So it sounds like an extra card or two is my best option, and use the iPod as a USB 2 drive for backup from my laptop.

I use the iPod as a an external drive for my laptop. I don't download directly from the cards or camera to it.
