Hover Fly
I spent some time in Mount Stuart gardens, yesterday, experimenting with reflectors, and trying for some hover fly images. I used a gold coloured refector for this shot and quite like the resulting colour.
1DS2, 180 macro & 1.4 tube, F6.3 @ 1/160, ISO 400, cropped to about 60%, tripod, reflector and a sore bum after all that time!
Best wishes

Great detail- it's hard to get the whole eye and body all in focus at these reproduction ratios. Nice background also- the bright 'tiger' colours of the fly and the purple of the flower really stand out.

I would maybe like the framing slightly more biased to the right- maybe in portrait, as I can see the cropped right probably has a lot of OOF white flower in it.

Looks very good to me. I like the way the colours are quite reserved here yet colourful enough. Sets a scene for me.

The detail is superb. BG complements the subject nicely. Excellent.

A very nice shot Phil. Would have prefered it without the white flower petal in the top RH corner.

Looks like it's off to a dance/exercise class with purple leg warmers :biggrin:

Hi Philip
the clarity and sharpness in the Hover Fly is brilliant. I like the BG. but the whites are a bit of a pest but you cannot help that.

Hi Philip

Wow, very nice macro shot, with great light and great detail. Good use of the reflector too. I have been experimenting with reflectors and I tend to find a matt white or gold surface the best. A silver reflector tends to be too bright and can end up looking like a flashgun was used. Here the gold reflector has added much softer light which works perfectly.

If I have a nit it is with the composition, it just looks a bit too unbalanced with the centre of attention too far to the right hand side. I would try a crop with a bit more of the flower in the frame and a bit less space on the left. Personal taste though.

Overall a top quality macro shot, excellent stuff :toast:

cheers

The reflectors work well here Phil. The gold colour adds a nice cast to the shot and the DOF is just right.

Excellent shot Philiph. I would prefer it even more if the top white flower was cloned out.
Bottom ones dont bother me. :toast:
