I am going to Cedar City, Utah for a few days to visit the in-laws (fun times). I know Zion and Bryce are both right there and I was wondering if anyone could tell me where is a good place to take the wife and two kids (14months and almost 3). They will be on our backs along with some camera gear. And I’m not at the top of my form (don’t tell my wife, I have her believing I am). Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hmm... leave the wife and kids with the in-laws and go have some real fun in the back-country? Well, that's probably not too realistic....

Both Zion and Bryce have some wonderful trails suitable for young families. Just head for either or both and check in at the visitors centers for the various options. You will have more than enough to chose from for all fitness levels. If I had to chose one, in the middle of summer, I'd go for Zion. More shade and flowing water is always nice when it hits 100++.

The Bryce rim trails and the Queen's Garden trail are both easily doable with kids on your back. Bryce is about 8000 feet so it shouldn't be overwhelmingly hot. Unfortunately I'm not that familiar with Zion.

If you have time, my first choice would be Zion. Everything there is spectacular. There is tons of information available on the National Park Service Website. Check out a map and visitor's guide and choose a trail that sounds suited to everyone's abilities.
Also, don't overlook Cedar Breaks National Monument. There is an easy 2 mile rim hike there that has some spectacular scenery. It is only about 20 miles east of Cedar City and would be good if you are looking for a shorter excursion.

I'm with Bill on this one! Remember Photography First Second and last, then you can put meals in there as needed.

Definitely go to Zion. If you don't have much time (and even if you do have a lot of time) check out the Kolob Canyons at sunset. The turnoff for this district of the park is only 20 minutes south of Cedar City off of I-15. Have fun!

I just wanted to say thanks for all the ideas. I tried to go to Cedar Breaks but there was so much rain that 14 was under water and we had to turn back, I guess they closed it shortly after that. So, we went to Zion and wandered around ther for a while. Wow! What a beautiful place. I'm already making plans to make an extended trip to the in-laws this fall (going to spend a few days in Zion).
