Just starting to play with macro lens and spending time down in the dirt

This was taken very early morning on an overgrown reserve in a reed bed full of warblers. I delibrately left the 600mm at home to avoid getting tempted by them lol

Canon 20D
Sigma 150mm + 12mm extn tube
Full frame, 1/160sec@f16 iso 400 raw, handheld
Processed in C1 Pro and PS CS2

I can't comment on the ID. An excellent portrait, the rain (or dew) drops are a bonus. BG
excellent for this portrait.

Hi Kevin,
For fly ID try Diptera info, they're really know their flies on that site.
Nice one

Tim the ID came from that site, the full ID was Anthomyiid - Hydrophoria lancifer. Like you say an excellent site but seriously hard work IDing flies, I didn't realise there were so many variants ! I've started using ring flash for a fill-in light as it seems to give a gentle boost in the detail but with water droplets it really shows up lol. This image was without the ringflash active but another image of the same fly with ringflash is imo better but the reflections are interesting to say the least :)

Excellent I love the water droplets, lighting and BG - I can't believe you handheld that at 1/160 your hands must be 'rock steady'

You must have excellent technique and a steady hand  .
The water droplets are a nice addition and the diagonal grass stem works well.

Barrie, I have the MR-14 unit with a couple of ring adaptors for various lens threads. There is a more expensive and more versatile version for canon kit but the MR-14 works for me :)
