I think they both work very well, but I feel the top image is a little stronger, as the bird appears to be looking more towards the bottom left corner which gives the image some welcome space.
In the bottom image I like the pose very much and the background is excellent,as good as the top one, however the only minor drawback is the lack of 'looking space' directly below the bird, along the bottom of the frame.

I prefer the pose of the second, but the light was coming from the wrong direction for it to be perfect. Having thought about it, I still prefer the second over the first, overall. The second is just more unusual looking and visually interesting.

They are both desirable images, but it's like comparing apples and oranges. They both have their merits but are completely different. I like the bottom image because of the impression of
power, grace and sense of purpose IMHO.
As said both great, the more I look the harder it is to choose, first reaction was top but then I like the curve of the tail in the second, so I give up.

Hi Tom
I prefer the second picture. I like the curve of the wings and the lighting is not so strong as the first one.

Great images but second one without a shadow of a doubt.
It screams Arctic Tern - a classic pose. Can picture that eye watching a small fish. I think we often forget to imagine the species and what it should look like when striving for that technically perfect image.
The first looks slightly awkward (neck sticking forward, feet trailing and tail pressed down).
How annoying the bird is in moult!

I prefer the latter - classic pose when over the water looking for fish or hovering over nest!

'cause it's a better photo. Too much shadow on the bottom one makes it sore on the eyes (eye in my case
