First of all, what the hell was I thinking a few years ago when I took my full-size Silverado pick-up up this road? Twice? Either the road has gotten narrower, or I really, really, really had no business up there with a truck that size.
This shot is the one that almost was. After it rained overnight, I awoke in the wee hours to see nary a cloud in the sky. By the time pre-sunrise came, there was a thin strip of clouds just above the eastern horizon, and some great fanning clouds over the peaks. Perfect! But by the time sunrise actually happened, a storm had moved in quickly from the north, allowing only the south half of the ridge to light up briefly, and the great clouds over the mountains had mostly cleared, moving overhead and out of the frame. Oh well, I guess it still turned out okay.

This one I call "Shangri-la." Those of you who have been up there might recognize this peak. It's the one with the heavy mining activity, criss-crossed with a myriad of roads. But in silhouette it looks pretty good.

For you Photoshop fans out there, I call this one "S-curve."
I know why you drive that full size Silverado! It's to carry around all the freaking low clouds you take along with you everywhere you go!!!!!
Very sweet Todd! #2 is just plain killer!!!!!!

And finally, lest I wear out my welcome, this one I call "X marks the spot." You might have to squint a little to see the "X" on the rock face. Or drink a few beers, smoke a doobie, whatever.
I've got tons more, but they'll have to wait for another time.

BTW, I jettisoned the Silverado in favor of a brand new Nissan Frontier NISMO off-road edition pick-up. The thing just doesn't even break a sweat when four-wheeling. And somehow, I can sleep in the front seat (and do so very soundly!), something I could never do in the Chevy. What the heck, here's a pic.

Oh, and Brent, clouds don't take up very much room, I generally just keep them in the glove box, in a compression sack.

Incredible set of pics, Todd. I really like #2. It almost looks like an aerial.

It's all these images you people post, my love for CO, and Todd's humor that keeps me lurking around. Yep, Todd # 2 is a great one, but they're all pretty nice.

Todd, great shots! I was up there a few weeks back and your are correct about the road. I just prayed I did not meet anyone coming from the opposite direction in that last stretch! I would not want to back up in either direction!
2, 3 and the truck pic for me...........this looks like an epic summer for you - awesome stuff. I've gotta check out P' Basin just for the road!

BTW, I got to P' Basin at around 3 in the afternoon, and left around 10 the next morning. In that time there was no one else in the basin. Weird. Especially considering the Mile-High Jeep Convention was in Silverton at the time. Saw people everywhere else, but not Porphyry.

Todd,
Its probably not very surprising considering those 4X4 folks like riding long loop rides rather than short and quick in-and-outs. Its a Jeeper (and OHV thing)- ya know.
