The Green Flash
I've been trying for some time to catch the green flash at sunset. This is a fairly good example I took last month near Newport, Oregon. So event only lasts about one second, so its hard to catch. My kids finally believe me when I tell them about this! They think I'm a bit off my rocker.

My camera is a D2x. I used my Nikkor 200-400 at 400mm. Exposure was f4.8, 1/90, ISO 100, with a tripod.

Hi Steve,

I'm from New Hampshire, and check the Mount Washington Observatory website regularly, where they have in the past posted photos of the green flash. Here is a link to other photos and some explanations. Good to hear your kids finally believe you, you shouldn't have any trouble after they check out some of these.

And as a kid who had a mom that was different from all the other moms, I think your kids will appreciate your uniqueness as they get older.

When I talk about the green flash, I'm always surprised how many people don't know what it is, and when you tell them, they don't believe you. I used to work on ships in Alaska, and we would see it quite often up there - better atmospherics. Thank you the link, those are some awesome pictures.

Nice catch. I have never seen the flash before but I'm going to be more aware of it now. Thanks!

Thank you! I saw it clearly, but unexpectedly for the first time last night up in the Olympic mountains. The instant the bulk of the sun fell behind the edge of a ridge there was this brief but intense small flash of emerald green. I couldn't beleive my eyes. I wasn't even looking for it, but immedately recognized it thanks to your post. Very cool!
