Common Loon, Gavia immer
Lake Nettie, Hawks, MI
The Common Loon is one of 5 species of loons in the world, all of which occur in North America. Its legs and feet are set far back for diving and swimming, making it difficult for it to maneuver on land. A loon chick will often rest on its parents back until it is up to two weeks old.
